Lori Banov Kaufmann’s Rebel Daughter, inspired by the discovery of a 2,000-year-old inscribed tombstone in Italy, is remarkably researched and imagined. Esther Bat Hanan, a lively fourteen year-old living in Jerusalem in 66 CE, finds herself at the center of multiple struggles: the war bloodying and threatening to destroy her home and people; her fight to survive loss, captivity, and violence; and the universal project of measuring the distance between who she is and who she most wants to be. Esther and her story are made timeless by her resistance to injustice, intellectual and emotional curiosity, willingness to fight for her family and herself and vast capacity to love. Proud partner of The Jewish Book Council. Truth vs.
