What most characterized the group of artists we call Impressionists was their determination to paint “modern life” in Paris, the capital of modernity. From department stores bursting with ready-made consumer goods, to a proliferation of various forms of entertainment, to examples of the latest technology, Paris embodied everything that was new and painters captured it all.
