In the throes of World War II, eighteen-year-old Sadie lives with her parents in the Kraków Ghetto. But when the Nazis take over, Sadie and her family are forced to seek refuge in the perilous tunnels beneath the city. One day, Ella, an affluent Polish girl, catches a glimpse of Sadie beneath the grates in the street. Ella begins to aid Sadie and the two form a close friendship, but the dangers of war test their strength and resolve.
