Born Mildred Ella Didrikson in Texas in 1911, Babe became America’s greatest female athlete. She combined raw talent, hard work and an unquenchable thirst for winning in a world in which women were not allowed or encouraged to be athletic, competitive, ambitious or to sweat. In 1953, Babe was diagnosed with cancer. Until she died several years later, she publicized her condition, served as a spokesperson for The American Cancer Society and raised millions for cancer research while competing as a golfer.
