In 1995 the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg announced that it was putting on exhibition 74 works that had been removed from Germany at the end of the war and that had been stored in the basement of the Hermitage ever since. Among these works were masterpieces by Degas, Monet and Seurat that had been assumed to have been destroyed in the war. The sudden reappearance of these paintings raises many questions about the role of art in the culture and the degree to which art should be subject to political efforts. Come see the fabulous “Hidden Treasures.” Sponsored by The Van Winkle Foundation.
