Swim Team Evaluations – What to Expect

Ages 6 & Under  
Swim 25 yards of strokes freestyle and backstroke and streamline kick on the back

Ages 7-8
Swim 25 yards of freestyle, backstroke and either butterfly or breaststroke and streamline kick on the back

Ages 9-12
Will swim the 100 Individual Medley and 25s of streamline flutter and dolphin kick on the back

Ages 13 & Older
Swimmers must have prior competitive swim team experience and will swim the 200 Individual Medley

Swimmers
Ages 8 & Under
Basics of dive of the block preferred

Ages 9-10
Dive off the block and turns preferred

Ages 11-12
Dive off the block and legal turns needed

Ages 13 & Older
MUST dive off the block and have legal turns

Sample Practice Schedule

The JCC offers three separate competitive swim team options.

Barracudas Swim Team

The Barracudas swim team is for our accomplished swimmers ages 6-18 years. All swimmers ages 9+ must be familiar with all four competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly).   Swimmers ages 8 and younger must legally swim at least two of the competitive strokes. This will be the Barracudas’ 22nd season competing in the New Jersey JCC-YMHA Swim League. Swim meets begin in early November and run through the State Championships in March. Dual meets are always held on Sunday afternoons. A stroke evaluation is required for swimmers new to the program. Additional new swimmers will not be able to join the Barracudas team after the maximum number of swimmers is reached in an age group.

Mini Barracudas

This swim team program is available for younger swimmers ages 5-8 who are able to swim at least 15 yards on both their front and backs and is designed to introduce these young swimmers to competitive swimming. A stroke evaluation for new swimmers is recommended.

IntraCudas

The IntraCuda intramural swim team program is for those swimmers ages 8+ who would like to improve their strokes and fitness but do not desire the level of commitment our Barracudas swim team requires. Swimmers must be able to swim at least 50 yards freestyle with rotary breathing. A stroke evaluation is not required.
