Fitness Director

Summary of Position

The Fitness Director is a 40 hour/week position which involves supervision of the entire fitness department including, but not limited to personal training, fitness floor attendant staff, group fitness as well as our virtual fitness programming.  Hours are flexible; though the position does require weekday evening and weekend hours depending on programming.  In addition to supervising and motivating staff, the Fitness Director is responsible for developing programs and initiatives which will enhance and increase member engagement and participation.  This Fitness Director also works to collaborate agency-wide-- connecting with other departments to create a healthy community among staff and members. This position reports directly to the Director of Membership.


  • Ongoing supervision, coaching and evaluation of personal training and floor attendant staff
  • Ongoing staff training and supervision to ensure proper/timely new JCC member orientations, safe equipment upkeep and daily cleaning schedules, and member/customer service standards and expectations
  • Overall responsibility for creation and management of big picture fitness initiatives agency-wide (e.g. special initiatives, promotions, events and classes, collaborations with other departments)
  • Responsible for the creation of group fitness programs and management of staff
  • On-going recruitment of members for personal training and participation in Fitness program offerings
  • Develop and evaluate on-going Fitness Center operational procedures and policies and recommend changes, as necessary
  • Responsible for developing, monitoring and adjusting the annual Fitness Center budget under the guidance of the Director of Membership
  • Maintain accurate participation statistics for fitness center activity
  • Supervise contracts with equipment service vendors
  • Recommend purchase of Fitness Center equipment as needed
  • Enforce all Fitness Center rules and regulations and ensure adherence to established member/customer service protocols and guidelines
  • Attend scheduled program staff and departmental meetings, agency staff training seminars and agency-wide special event programs
  • Attend quarterly Recreation and Wellness Committee meetings (typically weekday evening)
  • Be the voice of communication for the Fitness Department in person and virtually
  • Develop and manage JCC Fitness and Wellness social media presence
  • Training and Instruction (included in the 40 hours/week):
    • 2-3 classes/week group fitness class instruction (additional instructional hours to be paid at a rate to be determined)
    • Time spent working the fitness floor and engaging with members
    • Personal training time above and beyond these hours is encouraged if manageable) to be paid at a rate to be determined
    • Administer First Aid as necessary


  • B.S. Degree in Exercise Physiology, Sports Sciences or related field
  • Minimum 2-3 years managerial experience in a Health and Wellness facility, JCC or recreational-based agency
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, organizational skills, computer skills, social media skills, and the ability to inspire and motivate others
  • Ability to deal with diverse population; understand the physiological and emotional needs of members
  • The following certifications:
    • Group fitness certification from a nationally recognized accredited agency
    • Personal training certification from a nationally recognized accredited agency
    • Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR/First Aid/AED certified


  • Demonstrated knowledge of variable resistance equipment, cardiovascular/aerobic equipment and other exercise-related equipment
  • Ability to adapt technologically, work with fitness and social media apps, as well as basic Microsoft office skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a friendly manor
  • Demonstrated ability in fitness testing, evaluation and risk screening
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct well-formatted and executed group exercise classes
  • Must enjoy working with all ages and abilities
  • Personable, friendly and accessible to members and staff

Lifeguards and Swim Instructors (Part-time positions)
