The Great Jewish Food Festival

Today until the holiday of Shavuot on Thursday, May 28

The Great Big Jewish Food Fest is a 10-day online festival celebrating the history, diversity, and excitement for all things Jewish food. Join us for cooking classes, virtual deli tours, film screenings, panel discussions and so much more. All events are free, and we invite donations to help support those in the food industry who have lost critical revenue during the COVID-19 crisis and those who are experiencing food insecurity.

Why now?

The Great Big Jewish Food Fest was created out of a moment of opportunity, as people are at home and in their kitchens, when food professionals are seeking new opportunities to share their expertise, and when a top-tier international festival might be created with relative ease (no travel, no conference facilities, and ironically, no catering to coordinate!).

Who’s it for?

Programming is designed for all ages and interests. Whether you’re an experienced cook or a novice who’s just getting started in the kitchen, you are welcome. Just please make sure to wash your hands before you sit down for a meal.

Rembrandt/Velazquez with Cultural Historian Barbara Tomlinson

 Wednesday, June 10 from 11:15 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
In the 17th century Spain and Holland were almost continuously at war. Their politics and societies could not have been more different. And yet each country produced supreme artists whose work was similar in many ways. This startling exhibition pairs paintings from the two countries to demonstrate common threads that were contained in the great masterpieces each produced. Sponsored by the Van Winkle Foundation.

The Man in the Red Coat with Cultural Historian Barbara Tomlinson

Wednesday, June 17 from 11:15 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Julian Barnes has just written a book called The Man in the Red Coat.  It's inspired by a painting of Dr. Samuel Pozzi by J. S. Sargent. It's a sensational portrait of a sensational man. Pozzi was the surgeon who introduced listerism into his operating room and cut fatalities way down; he was the first French gynecologist who wrote gynecological text that was the standard for decades after his death.  He had an affair with Sarah Bernhardt, and was shot and killed by an unhappy former patient.  Hear this true story that is better than most novels and learn about this amazing painting.  Sponsored by the Van Winkle Foundation.

Best of the Fest for Film Festival Lovers!

What do we do when we can't  have our traditional spring Film Festival?
We ask several of our long-standing film committee members to cull through our Film Festival archives to suggest some favorites!
Introducing Best of the Fest

From Janice Weinberg
Heading Home: A Tale of Team Israel (2018) and Nicky's Family (2013)

Heading Home is a feel-good family film about Team Israel, the underdog national baseball team and their first time competing in the World Baseball Classic.
Nicky's Family is the forgotten story of young Nicholas Winston who successfully relocated Jewish children from Czechoslavakia to England prior to WWII.

From Vivian Toporek
The Little Traitor (2009)

“We showed this charming film about 10 years ago and it was received very well, as I recall. Plus, there are 2 famous, recognizable actors in it. I think everyone would enjoy this.”

Click Here to watch it on Amazon

 From Erica Needle
Dough (2016) and In Search of Israeli Cuisine (2017)

Sharon Danziger (sister of long-time JCC member David Feldman!) shared this wonderful resource (click here) from Penn Master of Applied Positive Psychology website which has webinars to help us all understand and deal with all the uncertainty before us. Several of us at our JCC had the good fortune to participate in one of Sharon's seminars; she was so inspirational, thought-provoking and real. Tune in to her and her colleagues at the link below. All webinars are free. There's at least one a day...30 minutes of content followed by Q&A. New webinars put up daily. Thank you, Sharon!

Now is a good time to see if you can save on your life insurance premiums

In an effort to mitigate some of the financial impact JCC members have faced during this crisis, JCC Community Partner Erik Wildstein of The Wildstein Group, LLC has offered to review any current life insurance policies that JCC members have to see if they are eligible for premium savings. This is a by phone, no fee, no obligation review.

Additionally, to help the JCC during this difficult time, Erik will contribute half of any commissions derived from this initiative to the JCC.

Erik Wildstein is an independent insurance advisor with access to all major carriers. According to Erik, life insurance rates have come down measurably over time, and it’s fairly common that by doing a simple comparison of existing policies, significant premium savings can be leveraged. Right now, many carriers are waiving physical exams, and rates may be trending up so this is an excellent time for a review.

“We’re all in this together as we navigate these unchartered waters. We hope you find this helpful and meaningful. We are here for you as best we can be.”
- Erik Wildstein, The Wildstein Group, LLC
