How to Save:

  • Complete an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training in May or June at the JCC.
  • Work at a JCC lifeguard
  • Get reimbursed for the Lifeguard course (receive a $100 signing bonus in your first bi-monthly JCC paycheck; receive the remaining reimbursement after you’ve received two
    JCC paychecks.

ARC Lifeguard Training - Blended Learning

Course includes seven hours of online blended learning.  Participants must register with the Red Cross. Each participant must register with a unique email.  Blended Learning (e-learning) must be completed before 2nd day of class (see link below).  Please see the Lifeguard Training listing for information relating to pretest, strenuous skills practice and completion requirements.

The ARC Lifeguard Training Course teaches candidates the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatics emergencies including drowning and injuries.  This training includes lifeguard certification, first aid training and professional rescuer CPR certification.

NOTES: Students must be at least 15 years old before the last scheduled training class and must be able to pass the following pretest skills:

  • Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:
    • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted; swim goggles are allowed.)
    • Maintain position at the surface of the water for two minutes by treading water using only the legs.
    • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound brick (no goggles allowed), return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the brick and then exit the water without using a ladder or steps, all within one minute and 40 seconds.

Successful completion of this course requires participation in all skill practice.  The practice sessions will require some strenuous physical activity.  Students are encouraged to check with their healthcare professional before participating in the course.  If a medical condition or disability exists, that might prevent participation in the activities.  Candidates must pass emergency skill scenarios, a written test and attend all scheduled class dates.

If a participant does not pass the pre-test, there is a $175 refund.
The pre-test is on the first day of class.

ARC Certification Course Cancellation/Refund Policy

  • A 100% refund, or one-time transfer to another class within the next 6 months, will be given if cancellation is received via email to JCC Aquatics department ([email protected]). 10 days or more before the pretest class starting date. No refunds will be given for cancellations less than 10 days prior to the course start.  
  • The JCC cannot refund any fees paid to the American Red Cross for Blended Learning or materials purchased through the Red Cross.
  • If the JCC needs to cancel the course, participants will be notified 24 hours in advance and will receive a full refund or full transfer to another course.
  • Payment of the course fee, completion of Blended Learning lessons and participation in class does not guarantee certification.  Students must successfully complete all course objectives and attend all classes to pass the course and be certified as per American Red Cross standards.  No refund will be given if a student does not pass the course.
  • If a candidate fails the pretest of any course they are entitled to a $175 refund.
  • If you/or your child has concerns or questions about the swimming skills/abilities needed for the pretest and course, please contact us (908-889-8800 x219) for a Pre-Course Skill Evaluation ($25) before registering for any Red Cross certification course.

To enroll in this course, you must be a current lifeguard with a valid American Red Cross lifeguard certification and complete the lifeguard training pretest swimming skills. (You cannot take this course if your lifeguard certification is expired for more than 30 days.) Please see the Lifeguard Training listing for information relating to pretest, strenuous skills practice and completion requirements.  Students must come with pocket mask, suits and copy of current certification.  Be prepared to demonstrate all skills and pass written exam.  Please bring CPR mask.  Includes CPR/AED/FA/LGT.

Prerequisites: Participants must be 15 years old by the end of training.  In addition, candidates must pass a pre-course evaluation consisting of demonstrating the following swimming strokes: front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly with a minimum American Red Cross Level 4 skill performance.  The purpose of the WSI course is to equip candidates with the skills and knowledge needed to teach swim lessons for infants through adults.  Candidates must attend all sessions, successfully complete all skills and practice teaching assignments and attain a minimum grade of 80% on the written exam to pass the class.  Maximum number of students per course: 8. 7 hours of online work also required.

Red Cross First Aid CPR/AED Blended Learning Training

This blended learning training includes online training and 1.5 hours of in-person instruction.  At the successful completion of both online and in-person training each participant will have earned their Red Cross certificate valid for two years.
