Youth Class Descriptions:
Water Babies (6-18 months)  This class introduces water in a fun way to infants and toddlers with their caregivers. Children learn basic arm and leg movements while playing games and singing songs. Basic water adjustment is taught while ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience in the water. Maximum number of students to instructor: 10 to 1.

Aqua Tots (18-36 months)  Aqua Tots should have had two or more previous sessions of water adjustment lessons, require flotation or support all the time or benefit from caregiver presence and support in the water. Children learn basic arm and leg movements while playing games and singing. Basic water adjustment and pool safety are taught while ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience in the water. Maximum number of students to instructor: 10 to 1.

Seahorse (3-5 yrs Preschool 1) Young swimmers become comfortable with water entry and begin front and back floats. Bubbles assist with flotation and arm and leg movements are introduced. Children who are comfortable putting their faces in the pool are also ready for this class, which will help them begin the transition to swimming on their own. Swimmers progress from large to small bubbles and to no bubble when ready. The parent/caregiver must return to the pool area 5 minutes prior to the end of class. Maximum number of students to instructor: 5 to 1.

Intermediate Seahorse (3-5 yrs Preschool 2) Swimmers start to gain basic swimming propulsive skills on the front and back as they progress from minimal support to independent swimming. Appropriate personal safety and rescue skills are included to help children meet safety goals. The parent/caregiver must return to the pool area 5 minutes prior to the end of class. Maximum number of students to instructor 5:1.

Advanced Seahorse (3-5 yrs Preschool 3) Swimmers must be able to swim on the front and the back without any support. This is an advanced swimming class geared for preschoolers who are comfortable in the water, but cannot be advanced due to their age. Maximum number of students to instructor: 5 to 1.

Level 1 Introduction to Water Skills (5+ yrs)  Swimmers learn to feel comfortable in the water. Level 1 participants learn to enter and exit the water safely, pick up a submerged object, swim on their front and back using arm and leg actions, submerge their mouth, nose, and eyes and float on their front and back.

Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills (5+ yrs)  Swimmers master fundamental skills. Level 2 participants learn to enter the pool by stepping or jumping from the side, roll over front to back and back to front, swim on their side, tread water using arm and leg motions and swim on their front and back using combined strokes. This is for the beginner who is not afraid of the water and needs some assistance forward and backward.

Level 3 Stroke Development (5+ yrs) Swimmers build on the skills mastered in Level 2. Level 3 participants learn to jump into deep water from the side, perform the survival float, perform a front and back glide and perform front and back crawl. Freestyle with rotary breathing is refined and students work on building endurance.

Level 4 Stroke Improvement (5+ yrs)  Swimmers develop confidence in the different strokes and improve other aquatic skills. Level 4 participants master their front and back crawl and learn the breaststroke and butterfly. Elementary backstroke is also learned in this class and students continue to build endurance.

Level 5 & 6 Stroke Refinement (5+ yrs)  Swimmers must have successfully completed Level 4 before taking this class. Participants will refine the four major strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly) and learn to swim with ease, efficiency, power, and smoothness for greater distances. Flip turns and competitive aspects of swimming will be introduced.

Middle-School Aged Swim Class  Gain endurance and fitness through lap swimming and stroke drills. Perfect for middle schoolers without the swim team commitment who want a swim class with peers of the same age. All levels.

Starts and Turns  Swimmers must have successfully completed Level 4 before taking this class. This class will focus on competitive diving progressions and all stroke turns. Course taught by the JCC Barracudas swim team coaching staff.
