The Last Mentsch

Monday, May 2 • 7:30 p.m.

Director: Pierre-Henry Salfati
Country: Germany, 2014
Language: German with English subtitles
Running Time: 93 minutes

Born as Menachem Teitelbaum, Marcus Schwarz (German Academy Award winner Mario Adorf) escaped Auschwitz, only to exterminate his Jewishness. With no family, no Jewish friends or synagogue, Marcus, a hardened old man, does an effective job of creating a new non-Jewish identity. But when faced with his own mortality, Marcus must come to terms with his past. The rabbis refuse his about-face appeal to be buried in a Jewish cemetery in Cologne. Determined to re-establish his ancestry, Marcus enlists the help of Gül, a brash chain-smoking Turkish woman with a troubled history of her own. The unlikely duo set out on a road trip to a small village on the Hungarian-Romanian border – a journey that irrevocably changes them both. This emotional narrative of friendship and healing explores the cost of forgetting the past and the power in remembering it.
