e were proud to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our Jewish Film Festival of Central New Jersey in 2014-15.
It was a great milestone! It’s hard to imagine that 10 years ago we screened three films at Union County College.
Now, ten years later, we have a vibrant Film Festival and have more than tripled the number of films we show.
Our anniversary was celebrated for five consecutive weeks in the fall and five consecutive weeks in the spring at
the Carmike Rialto Theater in Westfield, New Jersey. We showed 10 films to a total of 2,143 JCC and community
members. Along with the movies came extras like free popcorn, anniversary desserts and a basket raffle at the end of
the series. All of these add-ons were made possible thanks to the generosity of our sponsors. We had 45 sponsors
and a 23% increase in sponsorship dollars including a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
Our volunteers have devoted so much of their time and energy to the Film Festival, screening movies, preparing for
the Festival and working at it. Our committee is led by Elyse Deutsch and Marcy Lazar, who have been our Film
Festival co-chairs for five years in a row!
Our year was also filled with many other enriching and fun programs.
Led by committee chairs Gayle Nettler and
Janice Weinberg, we welcomed Hesh Kestin, author of
, for One Book/One Jewish Community. Larry Pargot
chaired our 6th Annual University Lecture Series, and we had many other author visits including local Westfield author
Eva Natiello who wrote
The Memory Box
and author Allen Salkin from the Food Network.
We offered our ever-popular Mah Jongg classes, even hosted a Mah Jongg Tournament, and we ventured out and fed
more than just our minds! Together, we went to the Wine & Food Festival at Alba Vineyards and took a cooking class at
Natirar 40 Acres Culinary Center.
A huge thanks to all participants, chairs, committee members and JCC staff for making it an incredibly full, fun and
